I gave myself some advice this week.
Sometimes I use this expression - “giving myself advice” - to reference a moment of sudden clarity, a BOLDFACE ALL-CAPS THOUGHT that drops into my brain to realign my life choices with a greater awareness of what’s good for me.
But this time I’m using the expression much more literally because I got to listen to me talk to me about me.
It happened thanks to the seasoned support and expert guidance of my friend Melissa, who put me under hypnosis for the first time. It was an experience designed to connect my “personality” (the version of me that I know in this lifetime) with my “higher self” (the larger, all-knowing part of my consciousness that exists beyond the limitations of my physical body and ego-mind1), and it was W💥W.
It was also not at all like the hypnosis you see in the movies. Melissa did not hold a ticking pendulum in front of my face, and my eyes (rather disappointingly) did not turn into whirling spirals.
Instead, it was an honest, heartfelt and creative conversation between two people. I remember all of it, and as I listen back to the recording, the only notable difference I can discern in my speech is that I’m talking about myself in the third person.2 It even turns out my higher self has the same wry sense of humor that I have, and he threw in an Ariana Grande reference at the end for good measure.
I did, of course, also dish generously about how to work more closely with our solar system. I was specifically interested in building a more vivacious personal connection with Venus, the planetary goddess of love. In my astrologer mindset, I know Venus as a diligent steward of harmony, balance, pleasure and beauty. My higher self helped me to appreciate how these qualities all blend and mutually reinforce one another, how they stem from a certain kind of Venus-ness we simply cannot describe in any other way.3 And to make this point, he doubled down on the essential importance of beauty as a pathway to enhance my Venusian well-being across the board.
So I listened. I told myself to focus more on my appearance. I told myself to wear nice clothes. I told myself to put on cologne every day. I told myself to change out the sad gray carpet in my house. I told myself to frame and hang the mountain of artwork in my closet. I told myself to listen to music from the Romantic Era. I told myself to go to beautiful places. I told myself to eat delicious food. I told myself to make it fashion, and I told myself to enjoy it.
I pondered this advice for just long enough to integrate it, which was only a matter of seconds because doing all of those things just feels good. And while a more cynical voice would easily dismiss aesthetic or sensual pursuits as frivolous or superficial in these unprecedented times4, my higher self was adamant. It makes sense to me down here, too - if my external world is a manifestation of my internal state, then how I feel has every relevance to what happens in my life. In other words: if I feel good, I’ll live well. It really can be that simple.
This straightforward insight is also perfectly timed with the twinkling skies above us, in particular this Sunday’s New Moon in Taurus. It’s the first New Moon since the March eclispsonox™, which marks this weekend as a welcome slow down in the pace of collective change. The luxury of divine sloth is especially well-known to Taurus, a sign that always wants us to take our time. While a rose will always smell as sweet, Taurus reminds us that we only get to enjoy it if we stop for long enough to inhale.
Taurus is ruled by Venus, and it is a celestial temple to the beauty that surrounds us here on Earth. Much like my higher self, Taurus also delights in things that appeal to our physical senses. It fully understands the appeal of creature comforts, and it wants to soothe our souls with the simple pleasures of gentle music, soft fabric, smooth chocolate, and richly-colored paintings. Taurus knows that beauty is not optional, that is a fundamental guiding force to make our planet a better place.
Taurus is also the place where the Moon is “exalted” in traditional astrology, meaning that it is the sign where the Moon enjoys ease of fit without the responsibility of rulership. Exalted planets know how to be comfortable. It’s like staying in an all-expense-paid resort: someone else takes care of your needs so you can just focus on being you. So once a year, the New Moon can bask in the loving stability of Taurus while Venus takes care of the back-end business.
What’s even more lovely about this year’s Taurus New Moon is that Venus is also in its place of exaltation. Even better, Venus is currently hanging out at the tail end of Pisces right next to its degree of EXTREME exaltation. Venus in Pisces knows how to sip the endless unconditional love of Our Universe like no other, and it will be all the tastier with someone else fetching the drinks.
This feels to me like the perfect recipe for embracing the natural power of comfort that beauty provides. And with Venus holding Saturn’s hand, we have the chance to commit to making our lives - and our planet - more beautiful in the longer term. Saturn has no interest in the skin-deep, and it will make sure that we focus on the kind of beauty that radiates from within.
So I invite you to take a page from my higher self and sign up to be more beautiful. Spend more time on your hair because you love yourself. Put on perfume because you deserve to smell nice. Buy yourself flowers because you are worthy of abundance. When you feel beautiful, everything gets easier. This is what my higher self promised me, and it’s what I’m promising you.
Love,
Patrick

Thank you to ChatGPT for this succinct definition written in the key of Dolores Cannon, the eminently brilliant creator of Quantum Healing Hypnosis Technique.
Melissa assures me this is a great sign of being connected with your higher self, and it’s also a practice that is not unfamiliar to the little me. If you’re ever looking for a bigger perspective on a situation, try talking about yourself in the third person and notice how much more removed you feel.
It’s kind of like taste. While each of the sugary things we eat has its own unique flavor, ultimately all of them are sweet and there’s just no other unifying word to use.
Every time a journalist writes “unprecedented times”, an angel pees in their pants just a little.
I love this! And what a great idea to invite and welcome beauty! I've been reading some books on Venusians (like Valiant Thor) who visited Earth back in the 1950s--and they were movie-star gorgeous.
This is so funny because I literally just got home from an afternoon of thrifting with my two youngest girls, looking for art for our house! I usually don't buy art because I have to be very frugal with my money, but I spent the last three nights cleaning my friend's boyfriend's house for a little side money (they are selling their house). Once I got paid, I thought that I would treat myself and try to find some beautiful artwork to hang that would inspire me to clean my own house, LOL. It does seem like the perfect time to add a little beauty into my environment with the New Moon in Taurus. Thank you for your post, I really enjoyed it.
