It’s so easy to talk yourself out of going after what you really want.
It isn’t practical, it isn’t affordable, it isn’t thoughtful. It’s foolish, it’s impossible, it’s selfish.
There are so SO many reasons we tell ourselves why we can’t pursue what we most desire, and - like all reasons - ultimately they are all made up. The truth is that you have absolute freedom to pursue whatever you wish. You are the creator of your life and you are very literally surrounded by infinity on all sides, so everything is possible and you might well get exactly what you want if you’re willing to ask for it.
Now I don’t mean to say that you will necessarily receive what you are longing for, nor do I mean to suggest that it would be what’s best for you. But I absolutely do mean that you are fully empowered to select where you put your sights. There is tremendous value in letting your untamed passion be your guiding light, and I know firsthand how miracles unfold when you give yourself over to the longing in your cells.
It can also just be so damn refreshing to remember that you are allowed to want things, that you are allowed to really really want things.
Wanting things is a healthy and entirely normal part of life, perhaps it’s even why you’re here on Earth in this body right now - because you wanted to be. Want is wild, instinctual, primal; it has no interest in reason, constraint, or negotiation. And the only way to really know what you want is to feel it.
As remarkably easy as this sounds, our human brains can be filled with so much dissonant noise that we are no longer able to recognize the pure, unfiltered tune of what we truly want. And I’m not just talking about the sea of advertising in which we have immersed ourselves, a celebration of commercialism so infectious that companies are now trying to sell me products while I pee.1 I’m talking about how we straight up tell children “that’s not what you want” when it very clearly is.
I witness young people experiencing this type of invalidation on a regular basis, and I also understand why it happens. Maybe we do it because their want is inconvenient, because their want is dangerous, because their want is confronting. And there may well be excellent reasons not to offer children what they want in the moment they express it. But there is a marked difference between telling a 5 year-old that they aren’t old enough to hold a flame thrower and convincing them that what they really want is a tulip.
And after so many years of being told that we don’t want what we want - and that we do want what we don’t want - it’s only natural that we get confused.
I was reminded of this yesterday when I went on a sun-kissed walk with a wonderfully inspirational friend who is ready to leave London for greener pastures. She and her family are courting a handful of coastal locations, and we delighted in talking through the three likely choices on her prioritized shortlist. Number 1 felt so clear and neat, the pitch was so well delivered, it made such perfect sense. It was a done deal, fully move-in ready, just add water.
Until she remembered that what she really wanted was buried down in third position. The reasons behind her pushing it to the bottom were carefully considered and respectfully rational, but her want had absolutely no interest in any of that. It just wanted what it wanted, and - being the hopelessly American cheerleader that I am - I told her to just fucking GO FOR IT. Because if you’re lucky enough to know what you really want amidst the clamoring cacaphony of chaos, you have every damn right to put it at the top of your list.
So as the Sun crosses into Aries today, I encourage you to let it light you up with ardor. Dare to rediscover what you really want, and double dare to reach for it. PS: Aries Bonus Points for all who tune into my class on Handing Back Opinions, this simple (and powerful) act of sovereignty is supremely well-suited to the season of the ram. If you want to tune in, get yourself a paying subscription and scroll down to the bottom of last week’s post for the video.
Dedicated advertising space above urinals is fairly widespread these days, and a few years ago I met a gentleman who sells video screens for bars and restaurants to put up in the bathroom.

You're so right, Patrick!
Most people know what they DON'T want but have no idea what they DO want.
It's as though we've been trained to work through an internal list of NOs before we'll allow ourselves to get to the YESes.
A big part of my work in this life, is flipping this process so people know what they want & start right there. Suddenly, they no longer feel the need to drag themselves through a stack of negatives before they get to play with the good stuff.
Great post, as always!
Heading off to get what I want ... ✨
