I woke up this morning feeling baffled.

There’s nothing I can point to as wrong (does it ever help to point out something as wrong?) or out of place; there’s no particular reason for the scratchy fog that has enveloped my awareness.

I can’t describe it as confusion in the typical sense either; I feel neither lost nor at a loss for what to do. It’s more like there is a whirring tornado of words in my head just below the level of my conscious inner monologue, which makes it very difficult to get a handle on what I actually think. I’m looking for my needle of clarity in a haystack of mental detritus, and for now all I’m getting is hay fever.

Maybe it makes sense that I’m feeling baffled right now because the world seems awfully baffling. I talked to a dear friend in Florida last night and she told me about “Alligator Alcatraz” - a new and deeply controversial pop-up immigration detention center in the Everglades. As is so often the case when the headlines first reach me, I couldn’t tell whether it was a joke. Part of me still can’t. And it seems like the people who built it also seem to find it kind of funny, which certainly doesn’t help me climb aboard the clarity train.

I know that my only chance of lucidity comes from deep listening, which means keeping emotional reaction and mental judgment at bay. And as I slow down, I can sense the polarity in my mind. I hear voices shouting all of the reasons why this is good, why this bad, why this is necessary, why this is unacceptable. I know there are millions of voices out there shouting the very words that now pass through my thoughts, and they feel fundamentally irreconcilable.

This isn’t a surprise. The competing narratives about what’s happening in the world - especially what’s happening in the USA - appear to have diverged beyond a point of no return. It would be possible to put political labels on this, but I’m not sure that helps. Or at the very least it doesn’t help me, because it so easily descends into “I’m (very) right and you’re (very) wrong.” Labels are fundamentally tribal, and as last week’s Cancer New Moon wants to remind us, tribalism doesn’t help when we use it as a force for separation.

This is where conflict comes from, and you might well be sniffing the stirrings of world war in the air. This nascent energy would align with astrological cycles, in particular this coming Monday’s entry of Uranus into Gemini. It marks the beginning of the “Uranus return” of the United States, the time when Uranus comes back to the same sign it was in when the country was founded in 1776.¹ This 84-year cycle is indeed linked with war - Uranus was in Gemini during the Revolutionary War, the Civil War and World War II.

It gives me goosebumps to write that, so let me also elucidate where I find hope for peace. Because Uranus in Gemini is not fundamentally about war, it is about disrupting the machinery of thought and information exchange - geopolitics, mass media, social discourse - in the interests of fostering greater freedom, originality and authenticity for all. These times of war in the U.S. and world came about when people experienced this disruption as deep interpersonal division and chose to resolve it through armed conflict. And the resulting wars fundamentally reshaped the country in ways that fostered cultural evolution, expansion and alignment.

These qualities are exactly the medicine the world needs, and it’s fully possible for us to embrace them without violence. War is not inevitable, progress is inevitable. So I invite you to step back from the precipice and simply notice that people are living in parallel worlds. Marvel that it’s possible for us to sit side-by-side and yet see completely different things. Remember that this is how the world works, that - as quantum physics suggests - we are all observing our own unique reality into existence.²

And as I arrive in this place of peace myself - a chance to look at the world through a gentle, curious and neutral lens - I am suddenly immersed in the ever-elusive clarity I’ve been seeking. It turns out that it wasn’t in my mind, which so brilliantly generates contrast for me to appreciate a variety of available perspectives. It was in my heart, which has no interest in picking sides. My heart knows the truth. It sees that we are in this together; it feels how it’s safe to love everyone.

This is how I am choosing to bridge the divide. I am not trying to bring opposing ideologies together in my head; I am dropping down into the comforting wisdom of my heart. You can put my heart in Alligator Alcatraz and it will still only have wishes of well-being for all. So as those in the world around us busy themselves digging trenches with their thoughts, I invite you to listen to the clarity in your heart. Allow for systems to be disrupted and send love to everyone you see. Welcome the opportunity we have to evolve, to expand, to align with the highest good. Because as divided as we might appear to stand, we are always and forever united in this Universe we call home.

And up there in the shimmering heavens, Uranus will be in Gemini for the next four months before it dips back into Taurus on November 7. It will come back into Gemini next April for 7 years, so consider this a chance to set yourself up for lasting success. Ground yourself in peace, love and compassion; start creating from that place.
