I’ve got a secret.

And it's a remarkably juicy one, too. I promise I’ll tell you one day if and when the time is just right, and until then you’ll be joining me in this ever so scintillating sensation of aggravated anticipation. It’s not that I don’t want to show you my hand; it’s just that I haven’t finished drawing all the cards yet, and I most definitely do not want to leave us both hovering in the ignominy of incompletion.

While we wait, I’d love to ask you what it feels like to know that I’m holding something back (and please trust me when I assure you that I am). Does it captivate your curiosity, or does it leave you crashed out in the cold? Do you covet my candor, or do you find merriment in the mystery? Do you dismiss me as a dawdling dolt, or do you dare to dance with me in the dark?

It feels like I’ve spent my whole Scorpio life studying secrets, and somehow I’ve never stopped to appreciate the emotions they engender until now. I will not pretend that I’ve never used secrecy as a means to less than noble ends, for I can readily recall the ways I used illicit information as social currency in high school. Equally, I have come to appreciate that secrecy plays a vital role in a compassionate society. I remember the calls I answered on a suicide hotline, and I know that those conversations would never have happened without ironclad confidentiality.

So perhaps secrets aren’t inherently good or bad; maybe that part comes from our own motivation when we choose how to use them. Are you keeping a secret to keep something or someone safe, or are you keeping a secret to wield power over a sticky situation? In other words: does your secrecy enrich the world, or does it only enrich you?

It is, as always, no accident that I find myself scrutinizing secrecy. Mercury and the Sun both moved into Scorpio this week, where they join the sign’s ruler Mars in its most furtive lair. Our language-loving cosmic messenger Mercury falls unsettlingly silent in Scorpio as it shifts into black-box processing, which means that you won’t ever see the manifold machinations behind its piercingly precise perceptions. This time around, Mercury will be shrouded in sunlight for its entire journey through Scorpio and remain invisible to the eye until it emerges as a more reflective-minded evening star in mid-November. Mercury is also currently hot on the heels of a similarly sequestered Mars, and these two together love nothing more than finding words that cut right to the hidden heart of the matter.

And so we find ourselves waiting for mail from a Mercury that is obscured from view, operating well below the surface level, and reluctant to share without thinking things through thoroughly first. This is the perfect recipe for a sensational secret, and our mission is to figure out what’s cooking. So as you breathe in that sweet smell of sanctuary, allow me to offer you four black pearls of well worn wisdom from my life experience as a Mercury in Scorpio native:

  1. Secrets are magnetic: When you know more than your audience, it’s easy to hold their gaze. So if you want to attract someone’s attention, promise a show filled with secrets.

  2. Secrets build bonds: Vulnerability loves company, and deep disclosure can make for fantastically fast friendship. So if you want to feel close to someone, let them in on a secret.

  3. Secrets incubate growth: Some transitions are so profoundly personal that they need a special place in our heart until they’re ready to be born. So if you’re making room inside for big change, protect it with a secret.

  4. Secrets invite the unknown: It is humbling to accept that we can’t see the full picture, and this awakens the mystery within. So if you want to expand someone’s horizons, tell them you’re keeping a secret.

Mercury will be skulking through Scorpio until November 10, and during this time I invite you to consider how secrets can serve you and yours. For my part, I want you to know that I am keeping my secret with love for the world and everyone in it (including you, and also me). Maybe this is exactly what Scorpio season gives us all permission to do, and I trust that our secrets will emerge exactly as they need to. Truth really does take time.

I’ll write more over the next few weeks as the Sun dives down into Scorpio’s still waters, and I share some insight on working with Scorpio energy in this week’s video forecast below.
