Sometimes it takes work to get what we want.
To be clear - I don’t mean “work” in a casual sense, the kind of work that comes so naturally to us that we do it without even noticing we are working. I mean the kind of work that feels like work, the kind of work that you know you are doing because it takes considered and consistent attention. I mean the kind of work that is often uncomfortable and at times exhausting, the kind of work that demands your full and unwavering devotion at every turn. And I mean the kind of work that you can’t abandon no matter how hard you try, the kind of work that wakes you up with a thump in the middle of the night.
This kind of work will always take time because it’s not supposed to happen right away, because there is an experience to be had first. If you imagine a race, for example, the finish line could well be perfectly visible from the starting line. The finish line might even be the starting line. But the starting line can’t become the finish line until you run the race, and you won’t become the runner you dreamed of being if you don’t pick your feet up and get a move on.
Those first few steps may will be supremely invigorating, but - if it’s a long race - you’ll find that the real challenge comes in the continued application of effort. So as you keep running, you might feel your initial excitement wane as the work sets in. You might flag, slow down, or stop, and you might well feel like you are repeatedly starting all over again but with less energy available. There might be a dawning realization that you are not running one long race, but rather hundreds of tiny races from burst to necessary burst of enthusiasm.
This is how it’s felt for me these past few years.
I don’t even know that I was fully clear on what I wanted when I jumped off of my established career treadmill and onto this adjacent astrological path, and I certainly had no clue how long the race would be. But I knew just enough to take those first steps, and I remember how thrilling it was to start doing something that I really loved. I had always been jealous of colleagues who were so immersed in their work that they pursued their professional interests in their free time - now I got to do that, too!
So I was thrilled to let my own inner fire guide me forward. And while it might look on the outside like I have been quietly plodding along since then, I assure you that I have tried to throw in the towel more times than I can count. I have restarted and restarted and restarted again, and sometimes I still get so damn frustrated that I’m not anywhere close to the finish line.
In fact, just this morning I woke up feeling so bereft of success that I soothed myself with a fantasy about working in HR for an investment bank. I’ve never worked in HR and I’ve never worked for an investment bank. It could be great! But alas, it’s not the race I’m running. And so here I am, finding the courage to (re)start again.
As I do this, I’m leaning on our favorite steady-handed planet Saturn. This Sunday, Saturn will cross the Zodiac’s own starting line as it leaves Pisces and enters Aries for the first time in nearly 27 years. Over these past few months we have witnessed the Sun, Mercury, Venus and Neptune do the same, each in turn (re)asserting its presence on the world stage. It is a journey that requires recognition of both completion and commencement, and the first degree of the Zodiac - from which we draw the name “Aries Point” - is like a cosmic broadcast station for impassioned intention.
Saturn in Aries is the patron saint of restarting, and it’s now announcing that all contestants must approach the starting line and (re)commit to running the race of life. With notoriously nebulous Neptune right next door, you might not know how long the race is, where it will take you, or even why you are running it. But you know that you want to have the experience of running it, that you want to become the person who ran the race. To Saturn, that is enough to begin.
And Saturn in Aries doesn’t just want us to begin, it wants us to get good at beginning. It wants you to learn how to relight your fire, and it will point you straight towards your own internal spark when you feel the flames start to fade. This is where you are being asked to hold your focus, the force that led you to take your very first breath because you just wanted so badly to live. I remember now that this force was with me this morning, that it’s with me in every breath I take - if only I allow myself to see it.
Saturn in Aries also wants us to remember that we are not - however it feels - beginning from nothing. You are beginning with the beneficial wisdom of your own life experience, which deserves your reverence and respect. You can know that you’ll move forward because you’ve always moved forward before, and you can give yourself credit for all of the steps that you’ve taken so far.
So I was selling myself short this morning. I forgot that the starting line is also a finish line, and I failed to account for all that I have done to get me here. Because I did not wake up one day as an astrologer, an intuitive, a writer, a teacher, a coach. I became these things after years and years and years of work. And even if I don’t know what I’m becoming right now, I know that I want to move forward and that is enough.
If you ever wake up feeling like I did this morning, it might be an invitation to clear out unhelpful thoughts about who you are supposed to be. I am Cancerian with Aries Ascendant so I suspect this is going to be a "big deal." Thank you for sharing this update. I also appreciated the clean hands "energy technique" for a fresh start! You are a brave soul to change your career path and I like the image of the start/finish line and also Mary Oliver's quote: "Leave room in your heart for the unimaginable."
Love the Clean Hands technique. I subscribed to the Energy Tools A to Z channel and will be following along. Thank you!
