There is darkness all around.
The Northern Sun spends its days hugging the horizon, having long since surrendered the grand heights of the summer skies for the clandestine comfort of its shadowy winter sanctuary. Withering daylight calls for a considered concentration of our public presence, while expansive nights envelop us evermore in the twinkling lights of the universe around us. It is an invitation to dine with the unknown and dance with the unseen, to let the darkness deliver its unending promise of potential.
In the familiar language of cycles, we might think of the Winter Solstice as the New Moon. Just as we mark the commencement of the lunar cycle with the Moon’s descent into darkness, we take our first steps into the new year as the seeds of spring lie deep beneath the frosty field. We are in the collective creative void, a place where our life force has invisibly but not imperceptibly diffused into the ether. The energy is somewhere between refreshed and raw, all too soon ready to be worked into another earthly venture like the cold, hard clay on a potter’s wheel.
This is what it feels like when the Sun enters the stalwart sign of Capricorn. And whether today marks the longest day or the longest night in your part of the world, the tide of light is turning for us all. In Western Astrology, Capricorn’s association with the beginning of winter speaks to its striving worldly ambition. Its ruling planet Saturn requires that we continually commit to crawl ourselves out of the cold blackness, and in return grants us the drive and determination to plant something lasting and meaningful in the ground beneath our feet.
Like all earth signs, Capricorn focuses on the tangible, the practical, the material. Its classification as a “cardinal” sign marks its initiatory proclivity, and it is no exaggeration to say that Capricorn is the part of the Zodiac where we can quite literally move mountains. And as much as Capricorn reminds us that Rome was not built in a day, it also shows us that the power of a carefully constructed empire can last for centuries.
In its highest expression, Capricorn allows us to contemplate our enduring legacy and become responsible stewards of the past. This month will offer us many opportunities to revisit this reflection, and I note both revisiting and reflecting as key words for a cosmic footprint that will see Mercury in retrograde in Capricorn ruling Mars in retrograde in Gemini. I will share my take on this next week; for now, let us look to celebrate the celestial cascade into Capricorn on this Friday’s New Moon.
As we prepare to witness a new beginning in the ultimate place of new beginnings, I invite you to consider what the world would look like if you were in charge. What would you invest in? Whom would you rely on? Where would you lay down borders? How would you structure society? And once you know your answers, I challenge you to measure them against the way in which you live your life today.
Solstice blessings to all -
Love,
Patrick
