I’ve been confused about what I’m doing here.
And if you’ve been watching my subsrciption saga unfold this past year, I can imagine that maybe you’ve been confused, too. My relationship with paid content has been sandwiched somewhere between conflicting internalized beliefs about value and worth, and I’ve bounced back and forth like a ping pong ball trying to land somewhere safely between the lines.
I’ve listened to (wonderful and well-meaning) people talk about the virtues of exclusive content. I’ve heard perspectives on the energetic exchange between (paid) writer and (paying) reader as essential (financial) fuel for the creative process. I’ve gotten tireless tips on teasing subscribers over the pay wall rainbow. I’ve also observed (and felt) the pleasure of validation when someone stands up to pay for prose.
I took this all on board and made it mine. And because I accepted that paying subscribers had to be treated differently from other readers, I decided that I needed to monetize my work through exclusivity. I thought that I needed to provide something premium to entice you to join me on Subscriber Island, so I put bait on a hook and threw out a line to catch you.
And now I’m here and this all looks ridiculous. Why on earth would I put part of myself behind a pay wall? I work because I love what I do, and the cost of you watching a video that I’ve already recorded or attending an energy session that I’ve already organized is precisely zero.
I know in my heart that I don’t need to entertain any more doubts about my value, that I don’t need to ask any more questions about the price of what I came here to create. My heart knows that my job here is simple, that it has nothing to do with me exchanging something I have for something you have. My heart knows that it is our connection that counts, and it sees that money is just another way we can connect. Maybe this is what love is, a joyful appreciation of our shared connection.
So there is no more fishing on Subscriber Island. I want you to know that you do not have to pay for love, and you certainly do not have to pay for this connection. Yes, it touches me when people (like you) contribute money to support my work. And it touches me when you share the truth you experience from reading my words. It even touches me when you secretly smile at your screen and see the world around you brighten ever so slightly. It touches me because it is a recognition that you and I are connected, because I know that in reaching your heart I am also reaching my own.
As always, this insight arrives in divine timing as we all celebrate yesterday’s New Moon in garrulous Gemini. The New Moon sets the tone for the month, and we are now enjoying Act Two of cosmic double bonus time in the expansive embrace of Venus and Jupiter. Their recent shift in signs from Taurus to Gemini brings us an even more buoyant expression of unabashedly abundant energy, and I am terrifically tingly all over.
Gemini is a place of pollination, a garden where the stimulatingly sweet nectar of new information nurtures our neural networks. We buzz like the bees as we go out to gather life experience, and we hum like the hive as we return to share our wisdom. Gemini and this New Moon are ruled by Mercury, which we find chirping comfortably in its airy abode just next to high-minded Jupiter. Mercury in Gemini prizes the primacy of open access, and has no interest in constricting the channels of communication with the heaviness of inherently subjective judgments about value or worth.
Yesterday’s New Moon also happened in the exact same degree as Venus, just hours after Venus finished passing through the purifying heart of the Sun. This renewed Venus in Gemini offers us an open-minded, baby-fresh view on the value of social connection. It invites us to appreciate the inherent value in the messages we share, and it encourages us to adopt a big-hearted approach to the information marketplace. Perhaps most poignantly, it asks us where we can unconditionally present more of what we know for the benefit of all.
So it’s no wonder that I am choosing to (re-)open our lines of conversation with my newly (re-)established ethos of Generous Communication. Generous Communication means that I don’t impose costs on creation, that I don’t make up a pricing structure to prevent you from accessing something that I can infinitely offer.* And in the gloriously humorous way that life works, this brings me back to the place where I began last year.
What Generous Communications means in practical terms is: (1) You get my communication for free, unequivocally and unconditionally; and (2) You contribute whatever you wish to contribute, from the flash of an inner smile to a paid subscription. As for me, (1) I will create from the heart; and (2) I will accept your contributions with grace and gratitude.
I say this last part with deep sincerity. I trust that if you resonate with my work enough to subscribe, then you will welcome the chance for it to travel further into Our Universe. I also trust that you know I wish the same for you, and I am here if I can ever help you travel further, too. So as we watch the pay wall crumble, please enjoy this video from last week’s Energy Clearing Session:
We focused on releasing fear from our feet, and since that moment I have been aware of a very distinct and palpable vibration in my lower legs. I have never experienced anything like this before; it feels like my body is waking up to something beautiful.
We’ll be having some more fun (!) with energy in next Tuesday’s inaugural session of the Energy Lab with my brilliant colleague Robin. For those of you in and around London, I’m also co-teaching a Summer Solstice Yoga Class & Ritual on Friday, June 21 at 7:00 pm with my wonderful friend Mary. Please find full details on both below, I’d love to see you there.
Love,
Patrick
*Generous Communication also exists in the Founding Membership space, where we get to spend an hour together every year. My relationship with time doesn’t yet afford me the chance to offer unlimited hour-long sessions, so generosity here will be experienced differently. If you wish to become a Founding Member, I invite you to choose your annual contribution from what’s in your heart with appreciation for what’s in mine.

Summer Solstice Yoga Class & Ritual
Friday, June 21 from 7:00 - 8:30 pm @ Yoga in Hampstead
Join Mary and Patrick for an evening of total relaxation and rejuvenation for the summer solstice yin yoga and ritual class on Friday 21 June, 7:00-8:30pm at the tranquil Hampstead studio, Yoga in Hampstead, 13 Heath Street, NW3 6TP.
This class is to celebrate the arrival of the summer solstice with a Yin yoga practice and ritual class with the element of Fire. The element of Fire corresponds to the muscle group of the glutes, IT band, and the core accessed through twists and side body stretches, energetically activating Manipura chakra, the solar plexus, relating to our inner power.
We will use ritual, meditation and energy exercises to connect with the brilliant and purifying energy of the Sun on the summer solstice. The summer solstice marks the high point for the Sun in the Northern Hemisphere, and it's a time when we can bring ourselves into alignment with the truth of who we are.
£25 for session
I deeply appreciate this post, Patrick. In my own Substack journey I’ve been wondering about this paywall business and something in me deeply resists. It only makes sense to me for newsletters where the paywall keeps out trolls. But if we don’t (yet) struggle with that, I fail to see the point.
Also, I feel deeply committed to some writers, like you, and it feels like the most loving act to contribute what I can even if I’m not “getting” some kind of bonus. I don’t need a bonus. By supporting you, I support what I want to see more in the world: love. Hallelujah for Generous Communication! 💕✨
