“Too much” is such a funny expression.
Do you ever repeat words aloud so many times that they start to lose their meaning? It’s like you can sense them soften into a syllabic slur, flowing seamlessly into a stream of sounds that once expressed symbolic meaning. Well I did exactly this with “too much”, saying it over and over until I no longer recognized what was coming out of my mouth. Maybe I even did it “too much”, because now it doesn’t make any sense at all to me.
Perhaps this dissolved state is the perfect place to reconsider what “too much” is all about.
On one level, I can see how the idea of “too much” might serve us. If you think about your life as a balancing act, the experience of something as “too much” is a signal to step back into equilibrium. If you feel you like have been working too much, for example, it’s a sign from your body-mind that it’s time to slow down and relax. If you feel like you have been talking too much, it’s a signal to listen. If you feel like you have been traveling too much, it’s a ping to come home.
It’s notable that these are all messages to move from activity (the “doing”) into rest (the “being”) - and in our hyper-productive culture, probably most of the “too much” manifests in the form of over-exertion. It can, of course, also work the other way. Resting too much can leave you feeling lethargic or disengaged from life, and our body-mind needs and wants to express its inspired energy in the external world.
So if “too much” is like a barometer for internal balance, then it’s something I can appreciate. But what about the notion that you can have “too much of a good thing”? Is this helpful? Again, I notice how it can invite us to mindfully adjust ourselves into alignment. I love coffee, but if I drink too much of it, I know I’ll soon feel like an endlessly repeating lightning bolt emoji.⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️ I also love candy, but if I eat too much of it, I’ll feel like a deflated circus tent. 🎪
I know there’s more to this, though, because there are some things you can never have enough of. For instance, you won’t ever hear me say:
“I had a great time at the wedding, but that couple is not going to make it because they just love each other too much.”
“I really liked going to the beach, but I closed my eyes when the sun set into the ocean because the beauty was just too much to take in.”
“It was wonderful to see all my old friends, but I don’t think I want to do it again because we just enjoyed ourselves too much.”
“It was nice to walk in the forest this afternoon, but I’ll skip it next time because it just gave me too much inner peace.”
So when we move from the physical world of balance and polarity up into the heart-centered world of harmony and synergy, it seems that “too much” no longer holds water. Or on a more practical level: if you look at your internal state of being and not your body, the limits of “too much” do not apply. Your soul can never experience too much beauty, love, joy or peace. These qualities are like the revered ambrosia of the Gods, and they are here to feed us for all eternity.
This insight is like music to my ears, and I can see that the song is - as always - coming from the skies above. Our cosmic virtuoso Venus has just entered its home sign of Taurus, where the solar system’s gentle giant Jupiter currently resides. Venus looks after beauty and love, just as Jupiter tends to joy and peace. And Taurus is a place of patient embodiment, a reminder to reconnect with the gentle nourishment of nature that guides every flower to bloom in the perfect way.
Venus and Jupiter together are known to create experiences on the earthly plane that are “too much”, more specifically those of the “too much of a good thing” variety. So while it’s no doubt wise to keep your momentary equilibrium in mind lest the scales tip so far that they fall over, you can also consider your balance from a broader perspective. There is value to making hay while the sun shines, and right now it is double bonus time in one part of your life (send me a note or even book a session if you’d like to know which part).
Venus will be in Taurus until May 23, and this year we get a double dose of double bonus time as Jupiter will tumble out of Taurus just days after. It’s also worth noting that our favorite iconoclast Uranus is frolicking through the later degrees of Taurus, and this gives us a chance to look at traditional ideas about Venus / Jupiter parties in a whole new way.
So in a world where your soul can never experience too much beauty, love, joy or peace, where are you holding yourself back? And what would your life look like if you welcomed in all of the delicious goodness that is available to you in every single second of your existence?
I want to leave you with one final affirmation, because there is something else that can never be “too much”: YOU. If you were ever told that you are “too much” or even that you are “too much for your own good”, that comment was not about you. It was about someone else who was experiencing a feeling of too much-ness and didn’t know how to bring themselves back into balance in that moment.
Let there be no doubt that you can never be too much. You are as infinitely perfect as Our Universe itself, and you belong here just as you are.💞
Love,
Patrick
PS: The part of my life that’s getting the first dash of double bonus time is all about groups, networks, and audience. 🙌 I have been blessed with some fresh ideas around what I want to create here on Substack, and I’ll be sharing these with you soon, dear reader.
PPS: I totally already know what I’m going to do (…and I’m doing it), I’m just waiting for the right time to release it. You can always rely on an astrologer to be very particular about the timing of an announcement, this stuff is legit. ✨
Weekly Oracle
This week we go underground with Pluto as it stops in the sky and calls on us to (re)claim our power. We also get to spend some time with Venus in Taurus and Mars in Aries, appreciating how these two work together to guide our creative process. And we check back in with Mercury in Aries as it picks up speed and moves through the end of its retrograde shadow period.
