Sometimes I forget to follow the stars.
It’s like I fall right out of the sky into a dissonant hum of daily life where things are somewhere between chaotic and overwhelming. This week I have spent hours awake at night wondering why my thoughts (and children) are in overdrive, why the whole world suddenly seems so snappy, why all of my plans are crash landing. And while I know I can let these moments pass gently by without self-judgment, I also recognize that sometimes I just feel out of sorts.
What I love about astrology is that it reminds me there is a bigger picture where it all makes sense. And it’s a picture that we can see unfolding in every moment of every day, if only we take the time to look up and listen. In my mind, it’s not so much that the heavens transform chaos into order, more that they show us there is always higher order in the apparent chaos. We get a glimpse of divine direction just long enough to let ourselves surrender to the wisdom within.
Mercifully, I find there are constant reminders to check back in with the cosmos. And I notice that it’s usually a comedy of ostensible errors that brings me back into aligned attention. Imagine you are on your way to an interview and look down to notice a stain on your favorite blazer. And then imagine that someone knocks into you and your mochaccino on the subway platform. And then imagine that a taxi pulls over into a prodigious puddle just as you go to cross the road. At this point, there is really no other choice than to laugh.
For me, this moment came when I thwacked my thumb on the ski slope in an unexpected white-out. My first thought - after “OUCH” - was an eerily automatic expression of appreciation for how well that fit the cosmic pattern. “Ah yes,” I consoled myself, “Mercury rules the hands and Mars rules accidents and they are sitting there together in the part of my chart associated with physical injury and misfortune.”
This is a curious and very real phenomenon known as astrologer good, and it comes about when we give ourselves permission to find joy in seeing how planetary alignments can manifest so literally in unpleasant life circumstances. This helps me to let go of any ideas that things should have transpired differently, and I find it brings me tremendous peace to say that “this is just the time when that was going to happen.”
As always, I also like to take it a step further to understand how what showed up is not only astrologer good, but in fact good by any measure. So maybe this was the planets’ way to remind me to slow down and pay attention to what I already know to be true.* It is a privilege to see the outlines of my existence etched so beautifully in the skies, and it’s a gift that I can share this same insight with the world around me.
*Special shout out to the host sign of this year’s Mercury/Mars summit: Sagittarius, which blesses us with an unending quest for spiritual veracity 📣
Since my thumb met the mountain on New Year’s Eve, I’m also throwing this message headfirst into 2024. And I know that the planets support this decision to decelerate, with Mercury hitting the brakes shortly after the last grand fireworks display faded back into the night. Stationary Mercury invites us all to pull our thinking caps over our eyes and take stock of where we choose to put our attention. What would this year look like if you stopped searching for success in the tangle of weeds at your feet and started soaking in the unconditionally loving support from the sparkling starlight above?
So as we begin another revolution around the Sun together, I remind you that you have every right to enjoy your life on Earth. You are fully worthy to be here just as you are, and you can also choose to be any other version of yourself that you want to be in 2024. I share more insight from my own New Year in the Weekly Oracle, with special guest appearances from Mercury, Mars and the Moon.
And if you’d like to start your year feeling the support that Our Universe offers, it’s your last chance to join the Moon & Money workshop. Weekly Oracle
This week I get up close and personal with Mercury and Mars. I share my refreshed sense of wonder that astrology actually works (!), and I remember how much more smoothly life works when we plan with the planets. I also celebrate Mars’ ingress into the glorious commanding energy of Capricorn, and I run through the chances we’ll have to let go of what no longer serves us with the waning moon.
