Sometimes life takes your breath away.
Right there in the middle of an ordinary day, you can step - or even stumble - into a fairytale. You can suddenly realize that you are not walking alone, that you were never walking alone, that there has always been an angel on your shoulder.
I wonder if we’ve all had moments like this. Or maybe I don’t wonder, maybe I am sure that we’ve all had moments like this. Moments that bring tears to our eyes because we just feel so profoundly loved. Moments where we know that we belong in this magical universe precisely as we already are, that we are home.
I believe that Our Universe is a fundamentally loving place, that being loved is our natural state. And here on Earth, we have the privilege of (re)discovering the love that surrounds us. We do that with intention and attention as we compassionately commit to live from the heart, bringing ourselves tenderly back to this soft center whenever we wobble. It’s like our bodies are antennae, and we are here together (re)learning to tune them to love.
This isn’t work any more than breathing is work. It is something we are all born knowing how to do, and it goes best when we relax. We stop tuning our antennae to the mental and emotional noise in our heads and it just happens. The receiver spins smoothly into alignment, the signal gets crystal clear, and we hear what was always there: love.
I notice this happening more and more in my life. This week, I paused to take a picture of my favorite local graffiti on a nearby bridge. It was a bright blue morning; the letters seemed so sharply defined in the sunshine. So I snapped the shot, glanced down to check the image, and promptly dropped my jaw to the floor. I wasn’t just looking at H, O, P and E, I was looking at the invisible light that illuminates every moment with love. I was looking at hope.
Maybe life wasn’t taking away my breath, maybe it was giving it back to me.
And today we all have the chance to take our first breath again as the Moon comes to meet the Sun just two strokes before midnight here in London town. New Moons in Cancer are always special because they come to us from the Moon’s very own celestial castle in the clouds. Cancer is the welcoming womb of the Zodiac, and it radiates with the divine feminine energy that cared enough to create us. It is a place of tender nurturing, a safe haven in the raging storms of change that blow through the world. Cancer is where we find our family, and in its higher harmonics it is where we realize that we are all family.
New Moons are a time of fertilization, and the disappearance of the Moon from the sky is a reminder that the fullness of its light exists deep within us. A New Moon is a window into the infinite possibilities that are already present in your imagination, an invitation to appreciate that you are the place of creation for your life. Look around your soul and you’ll see that everything is part of you. There is no separation between the little you who reads these words and the bigger You that twinkles in the skies above.
This is the first New Moon in Cancer we’ve witnessed in 15 years that doesn’t face off against the probing powerhouse of Pluto in Capricorn; instead it sits strikingly in direct opposition to the dwarf planet Ceres. You might recognize the mythological connection these two share, and you might even know that Pluto abducted Ceres’ daughter Persephone to his underworld kingdom. As the goddess of agriculture, Ceres let the earth fall into famine while she wailed in grief and wallowed in sadness until her daughter was - at least partially - returned.
Ceres represents the mourning mother in astrology, and it is associated with both the nourishment we offer and the nourishment we withhold. Oppositions often highlight how we express cosmic patterns in relationships, so you might consider when and why you open and close your arms to those you cherish. And if you are willing to accept that the person sitting across the table is just another reflection of yourself, how can you hold them more dearly in your heart?
This New Moon is also sitting with the dog star Sirius. This brilliant star has been worshipped across space and time, perhaps most notably in ancient Egypt where it marked the summer solstice, the flooding of the Nile river, and the beginning of a New Year. Sirius brings honor, passion, faith and prominence. When aligned with either the Sun or the Moon, it promises success - which means that today’s New Moon is serving up a double dose of good fortune.
As I pause take in the glory of today’s New Moon, I wonder if the greatest fortune of all is being here now in this place where we get to choose how we live. We can choose to live with love for people far away who seem to stand for something so different from how we see ourselves, and we can choose to live with love for people up close who seem to bring out the parts of ourselves that we do not yet know how to embrace. Time and time again, we can choose to live with love until it’s the only choice that we ever want to make.
So maybe the message is this: Choose to live with love and your success will be ensured. And if you’d like to embrace more love in your life, come join me in the Energy Lab on Tuesday. We’ll be playing with the energy of the Sun and connecting with solar qualities like happiness, joy, optimism, confidence, sovereignty, leadership, loyalty, majesty, heart, purpose, radiance, brilliance, creativity, play, and - of course - HOPE.
You’ll find full details below, all are welcome and I’d love to see you there.
